However, they have just become parents
Narrative
Jesus and Maria are a couple who are going through a difficult time in their relationship. In order to shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence. The entire film was shot in 10 days.. For Sale: Glass is Unbreakable, So Your Table Will Last Forever.
I thought I would watch a horror film
Part 1 (2024). In a way it was; it was real life, natural horror. Not monsters, supernatural and nightmares or things that go bump in the night. I gave it a 6 because I think it deserves a little better than the middle of the road rating. Not a lot of character development, but we get very little from 3 characters – Jesús, María and Jesús’s brother Carlos.
And Ruth, the 13-year-old neighbor
Maria can be extremely annoying at times; there really is nothing likable about him. I really liked her husband, Jesus. The contrast between them is so deep that I don’t even understand how they can be together. I’ve known couples who are opposites, but this couple was not believable to me. She’s a character on the periphery, and by the end of the movie I understood why she even exists in this movie.
It’s an emotionally dark, dark movie
The actress did a good job with her performance, because like Maria, I just wanted to reach into the movie and slap her a few times. It was also shot in dim lighting, with very little color, except for one scene where there are a lot of bright colors, which was definitely intentional. It was all about the characters’ emotions for me. It was very difficult to watch at times. There is some dark comedy in the first act, but it doesn’t last long.
I can’t say whether I recommend this movie, I’m heartbroken
I don’t think it’s a waste of an hour and a half, but I think you should go in knowing that it’s dark and emotionally raw and NOT a horror movie. I don’t know how IMDB figures out what genre movies to list, but The Coffee Table is not a horror movie, or at least not what the average horror fan wants when they go looking for one. It’s also listed as a dark comedy, but there’s so little of that that I don’t think it even belongs there. Drama is the only genre that makes sense – tragedy would work if that were a category. Now I’m looking for a real horror movie that I haven’t seen yet.
